Description
New for the 22-23 Academic Year!
The Spanish 1 summer course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the Spanish language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. This course is guided by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language World Readiness Standards, with emphasis on reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Students will be guided to practice and asked to demonstrate these skills regularly in the course as they explore four main themes: (1) Personal & Public Identities, (2) Contemporary Life, (3) Families & Communities and (4) Beauty & Aesthetics. Students will also make comparisons between their own culture and the culture of the Spanish-speaking world in relation to these themes throughout the course.
Please note that this course is an abbreviated course which lasts 8 weeks. Therefore, the course does not cover a full year’s curriculum with the same depth that is covered in a year-long course. Students are expected to work approximately 8-10 hours per week. In addition, if the student is taking this course for credit recovery or initial credit, it is strongly advised that you check with the student's school to confirm that the topics covered (see course syllabus) match those required by the school. You may also want to confirm with the school the process for receiving credits, which may involve an assessment administered separately by the school.
