Description
This course will concentrate on three areas of study: literature, language, and writing. Our study of literature will concentrate on British Literature and will include short stories, poetry, nonfiction, a self-selected novel, and a Shakespearean play (Macbeth). Students will increase their language skills by working on improving vocabulary, grammar, and usage skills, specifically those tested on the SAT Writing Test. These skills will go hand in hand with the writing lessons, as students work on improving written communication. Writing assignments include: personal statement, college essay writing, persuasive writing, comparison essay, illustration essay. Students will also practice for the SAT Reading Test. All materials are online. There is a self-selected novel that students will find locally at their school or public library.
Prerequisites
Successful completion of English 11.
Please Note: This course contains an end-of-course proctored exam. Instructions for students to identify an appropriate adult proctor are included in the course lessons.
Required Texts: This course requires students to obtain a copy of a certain text. Details provided in the Additional Requirements field of this course description.
Course Objectives
- Introduce students to origins of British Literature and specific historical, cultural, and literary design processes that have shaped these works.
- Provide students with critical and analytical frameworks necessary to examine literature from a variety of time periods and socio-political perspectives.
Students will:
- Be able to write with college level competency.
- Be able to write and research competently, observing the conventions of Standard English.
- Be able to appreciate and interpret fiction, poetry, and drama.
- Have an understanding and appreciation for British Literature.
Additional Requirements
Students will need to obtain a copy of one of the texts listed at the bottom of the course syllabus for use in Week 23. These texts are available at many school or local libraries or for purchase online for a small fee.
