Description
This is a summer course that introduces students to concepts seen in an Algebra 1 course. Specifically, students will explore real numbers, algebraic expressions, functions, equations and inequalities, slope and linear equations, systems of linear equations, polynomials and factoring, and quadratic equations. There will be an emphasis on solving real world applications using linear, quadratic, and exponential models.
Please note that this course is an abbreviated course which lasts 8 weeks. Therefore, the course does not cover a full year’s curriculum with the same depth that is covered in a year-long course. Students are expected to work approximately 8-10 hours per week. In addition, if the student is taking this course for credit recovery or initial credit, it is strongly advised that you check with the student's school to confirm that the topics covered (see course syllabus) match those required by the school. You may also want to confirm with the school the process for receiving credits, which may involve an assessment administered separately by the school.
Prerequisites
Pre-Algebra or equivalent
Course Objectives
This course will focus on the following objectives:
- Identify relationships between quantities within the real number system
- Interpret the structure of numerical and algebraic expressions
- Perform operations on expressions and write equivalent forms to solve problems
- Create equations to describe relationships
- Reason with equations and inequalities
- Interpret and build functions using proper function notation
- Construct, compare, and interpret linear, quadratic, and exponential models
Additional Requirements
Please note: This course may include course content which will require regular access to a desktop computer with a Windows/Mac operating system or Chromebook. Some parts of the course may not be able to be completed on a mobile device.
