Description
The U.S. History: 1877-Present is designed to help students in grades 9-12 engage and understand significant events, peoples, ideas, and eras of the second half of the American history survey. Content is divided into 10 modules explored over a 4 week session. Major political, social, economic, cultural, and military events are analyzed in the context of United States domestic, international, and global affairs.
Topics of study include the Harlem Renaissance, World War II, the Cold War, and Globalization.
Through this online course, students will improve their academic and technological abilities while developing personal skills needed to succeed in the 21st Century. Overall, an emphasis on discussion, critical thinking, research, and writing provide students with a dynamic and relevant overview of US History needed for graduation.
All course material is included within the online course. There is no need to purchase textbooks or material of any kind.
Please note that this course is an abbreviated course. Therefore, the course does not cover a full curriculum with the same depth that is covered in a semester-long course. Students are expected to work approximately 8-10 hours per week. In addition, if the student is taking this course for credit recovery or initial credit, it is strongly advised that you check with the student's school to confirm that the topics covered (see course syllabus) match those required by the school. You may also want to confirm with the school the process for receiving credits, which may involve an assessment administered separately by the school.

Course Objectives
- The students will analyze and evaluate the major events and decisions made in the 20th century.
- The students will analyze and evaluate leadership characteristics of important American leaders.
- The students will develop critical thinking skills by reading, writing, debating and creating documents and presentations based on historical record.
- The students will be able to use different technology based media such as email, word processing, web page development and multimedia to communicate their ideas.
- The students will develop clear, effective writing abilities by using Internet based electronic communication programs.
- The students will be able to use the Internet to conduct effective searches for information and they will be able to analyze and evaluate the information found for accuracy and value.
Additional Requirements
*Students who plan to transfer credit from VHS Learning to their full-time high school should check with their school to confirm they will accept the credits before registering for a VHS Learning summer course.
