Coming June 2024!
This is a self-paced credit recovery course, in which students will be introduced to exercise and physical fitness and will examine the benefits of exercise, lifestyle choices that can prevent disease, and tips for kick-starting a healthier lifestyle. Students will learn about the skeletal system, including how muscles perform and considerations for safe and effective exercise. Students will be expected to complete a 3-week fitness log before completing the course.
Major concepts include:
- Understanding exercise and beginning an exercise program
- Components of fitness
- Bones, joints, and muscles
- Cardiovascular and respiratory systems
- Energy systems
- Exercise nutrition
Students learn through online lesson activities, videos, and interactive activities. Modules contain a variety of lessons, which conclude with a brief self-check and module exam. The course concludes with a cumulative exam.
This course uses content from Accelerate Education taught by a VHS Learning instructor who is certified in their content area and who follows VHS Learning policies. The course will be hosted in the Buzz learning management system. Students will spend up to 60 hours completing this course, though the actual time spent will vary based on understanding of topics covered in this class.
Credit recovery courses do not meet initial eligibility requirements for NCAA. Students who require flexible courses meeting initial eligibility requirements should consider VHS Learning self-paced courses, which can be found in the VHS Learning Catalog.
Prerequisites
Students should confirm that their high school will accept this course for credit recovery before registering for this course.
Course Objectives
- Understand how basic body systems work and are related to exercise.
- Review the effects of activity on the body, the risks associated with inactivity, and the basic components of health-related fitness.
- Understand how physical activity and nutritionally balanced meals promote wellness.
- Establish fitness routines that address fitness level, goals, and interests.
Additional Requirements
- Students will be expected to upload a fitness log that tracks 3-weeks of exercise.
- Students may need access to a stopwatch or timer to document exercises.
