This is a flexible instructor-led credit recovery Spanish 1 course. Instructors regularly interact with students and provide assistance and feedback on work. This course covers Spanish 1 concepts for credit recovery. Students may work at their own pace to complete the course; students may take up to 15 weeks to complete the course.
The Spanish 1 Summer course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the Spanish language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. This course is guided by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language World Readiness Standards, with emphasis on reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Students will be guided to practice and asked to demonstrate these skills regularly in the course as they explore four main themes: (1) Personal & Public Identities, (2) Contemporary Life, (3) Families & Communities and (4) Beauty & Aesthetics. Students will also make comparisons between their own culture and the culture of the Spanish-speaking world in relation to these themes throughout the course.
Please note that this course is an abbreviated course. Therefore, the course does not cover a full year’s curriculum with the same depth that is covered in a year-long course. Students are expected to work approximately 8-10 hours per week. In addition, if the student is taking this course for credit recovery or initial credit, it is strongly advised that you check with the student's school to confirm that the topics covered (see course syllabus) match those required by the school. You may also want to confirm with the school the process for receiving credits, which may involve an assessment administered separately by the school.

Course Objectives
- Identify basic facts from memorized or familiar words and phrases when they are supported by repetition, gestures, or visuals in informational texts and in conversations.
- Communicate by asking and answering simple questions on familiar and everyday topics, using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases, and simple sentences.
- Demonstrate basic needs related to familiar and everyday activities, using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases, simple sentences, and questions.
- Express personal feelings and preferences and react to those of others, using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases, simple sentences, and questions.
- Present information about oneself, interests and activities using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases, and simple sentences (in both speaking and writing).
- Express likes and dislikes on familiar and everyday topics of interest, using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases, and simple sentences (in both speaking and writing).
- Identify products and practices of other cultures to help understand their perspectives.
- Compare other cultures with one’s own in familiar everyday contexts.
Additional Requirements
- Access to special characters specific to the language, including á, é, í, ó, ú, ü, ñ, ¡, ¿.
- Access to a device with headphone, microphone, and camera.
- Students will be expected to record and upload videos of themselves speaking in target language in order to exhibit proficiency in the speaking domain using a video tool within the course platform.
- Students who plan to transfer credit from VHS Learning to their full-time high school should check with their school to confirm they will accept the credits before registering for a VHS Learning Credit Recovery course.
