Description

American Sign Language 3 builds upon skills developed in American Sign Language 2, extending students’ ability to understand and express themselves in American Sign Language and continuing to increase their vocabulary and speed. The focus of expressive skill improvements will be to further students’ abilities in expressing increasingly complex concepts, while showing some spontaneity in signing. Receptive skill goals for students will also include attaining more facility and faster understanding when viewing the language signed at normal rates. This course targets Novice-High Level of World Language Standards and Benchmarks and will address the five goal areas targeted in the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, communities.

Prerequisites

Successful completion of American Sign Language 1 and 2.

Please Note: This course contains an end-of-course proctored exam. Instructions for students to identify an appropriate adult proctor are included in the course lessons.

Course Objectives

Generate sign narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective techniques, well-chosen details and well-structured event sequences.
Produce clear and coherent signing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
Increase receptive ASL skills, including proper translation through English and ASL Gloss.
Conduct short as well as more sustained research on Deaf Culture and ASL-related topics based on discussion prompts and/or focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.

Additional Requirements

Due to the nature of an online ASL course, for assessment purposes, students must have access to a device that will enable them to record and upload videos of themselves demonstrating their ability to sign.
