Do you love writing poems, plays or stories? Or have you always wanted to try? Is your favorite part of English class that week when you get to do a creative writing project? And have you ever wondered how your favorite novelists, dramatists, or poets came up with their ideas and then turned them into dazzling works of art? In this course, we will explore the entire process of creative writing--from finding the self-motivation that helps you begin generating ideas and actually writing; to techniques writers use to create; to ultimately honing and polishing final products.
The course begins with an exploration of the creative writing process, and then turns to focus on specific literary elements such as setting, character, plot, point of view, and style. As students learn about these stages and aspects of the creative writing process, they will have the opportunity to practice each for themselves. Students will work collaboratively throughout the course, both offering each other constructive feedback and working together on projects. Throughout the course of a semester, we will explore different genres, including drama and poetry. Students will develop a portfolio of written work in a variety of genres, lengths, and styles. Since all writers are also readers, students will engage in weekly readings, discussions of texts, and analysis of the writer's craft. The course culminates with students curating their portfolio and "reimagining" of one of their short stories into a different medium. If you've ever wanted to get started on a novel or play, a collection of poems, or any other creative writing endeavor, this is the course for you!
Note: Because students will bring their individual perspectives from a range of ages, life experiences, and levels of maturity, student writers should expect to read and provide feedback on creative writing that may contain mature content.
Proctored Exam: Please note that this course contains an end-of-course proctored exam. Instructions for students to identify an appropriate adult proctor are included in the course lessons.
