This is a summer course that will explore classical methods of secret code writing. Students will learn basic cryptography language and investigate various ciphers used before the use of computers. They will learn how to write secret codes using ciphers such as the Caesar cipher, Vigenere cipher, Affine cipher, Jefferson Wheel cipher, and the Playfair cipher. Students will use various mathematical concepts to read and write secret messages using these ciphers. In addition to code writing, they will also explore the impact of these ciphers on society during the time of their use.
Please note: This course may include course content which will require regular access to a desktop computer with a Windows/Mac operating system or Chromebook. Some parts of the course may not be able to be completed on a mobile device.
*Students who plan to transfer credit from VHS Learning to their full-time high school should check with their school to confirm they will accept the credits before registering for a VHS Learning summer course.
