This is a summer course that will explore classical methods of secret code writing. Students will learn basic cryptography language and investigate various ciphers used before the use of computers. Students will learn how to write secret codes using ciphers such as the Caesar cipher, Vigenere cipher, Affine cipher, Jefferson Wheel cipher, and the Playfair cipher. Students will use various mathematical concepts to read and write secret messages using these ciphers. In addition to code writing, students will also explore the impact of these ciphers on society during their time of use.
Students will be able to:
Understand the basic language of cryptography
Encrypt and decrypt messages using various ciphers within classical cryptography
Understand and explain the impact of these ciphers on society
Analyze and compare the security of various ciphers
Develop an understanding of the importance of code writing
It is highly recommended that students work on this course on a computer as some resources used in the course are not accessible on mobile devices or tablets.
