Description
This semester course is designed for students interested in an introduction to college mathematics. The course will cover topics including a review of core pre-calculus topics, limits and continuity, derivatives and applications of derivatives. Students will make connections among these topics as well as solve real-life applications. An emphasis will be placed on mathematical vocabulary and explanations of solutions in writing.
Prerequisites
Prior to taking this course, students should have completed courses that explore topics in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and elementary functions. Students should be familiar with the properties of these elementary functions, which include linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, and piecewise-defined functions.
This course is for higher-level study and offers a modified curriculum for Level 5 ESL students. Emphasis will be placed on mathematical vocabulary and explanations of solutions in writing.
Please Note: This course contains an end-of-course proctored exam. Instructions for students to identify an appropriate adult proctor are included in the course lessons.
Course Objectives
Students will be able to:- Work with functions represented in multiple ways: graphical, numerical, analytical, or verbal.
- Understand the meaning of the derivative in terms of a rate of change.
- Use derivatives to solve problems.
- Communicate mathematics and explain solutions to problems verbally and in writing.
- Model a written description of a physical situation with a function or a derivative.
- Use technology to solve problems, experiment, interpret results, and support conclusions.
- Determine the reasonableness of solutions.
- Develop an appreciation of calculus as a coherent body of knowledge.
Additional Requirements
Students are required to have a TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator.
