Description
This course is for Online Judaic Studies Consortium (OJSC) students only. This course is for students in the Online Judaic Studies Consortium (OJSC). If you are not an OJSC student but are interested in taking this course, please contact Lisa Micley at ([email protected]) to discuss your options. This course will serve as an introduction to rabbinic literature, and specifically, the teachings of our ancient sages as found in the Mishna, the first major written compilation of the Jewish oral traditions, and the first major work of Rabbinic Judaism. Through this course, students will begin to understand “Talmudic thinking” and the way such thinking began the process of developing rabbinic Judaism which has continued for two millennia. Through linguistic and historical analysis, students will study the different personalities and layers of Mishna which will lay the foundation for a solid understanding of Talmudic discourse. More advanced students will have the opportunity for independent enrichment with additional source material from the Mishna, other Tannaitic works, the Talmud, and the legal codes of Maimonides.
