Description
This course is designed to equip students with the theory and structure of screenwriting so that they may mold their ideas into a professional product designed for the screen. Emphasis is upon the literary conventions of the form -- character, conflict, plot, dialogue -- as well as the technical elements which make scripts and screenwriting unique. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to conceive, develop, and craft their own original idea into a professional screenplay.
Prerequisites
Please note this course contains a final exam that will require the student to identify in advance an appropriate location as well as an adult proctor for the exam.
Course Objectives
Students should be able to:
- Identify and define basic screenwriting terminology.
- Analyze the fundamental building blocks of drama: 3 act structure, character development and conflict, setting, and plot.
- Critically evaluate and discuss both written and visual "scripts".
- Produce a credible screenplay that incorporates all of the dramatic building blocks (90-120 pages).
