This is a summer course that introduces students to core concepts and content needed in Algebra 1. Specifically, students will explore basic mathematical operations, perimeter and area, expressions and equations, the coordinate plane, and slope. This course is appropriate for students who want an introduction to algebraic topics as well as for students who have taken an algebra course, but want some added practice.
Please note that this course is an abbreviated course which lasts 4 weeks. Therefore, the course does not cover a full year’s curriculum with the same depth that is covered in a year-long course. Students are expected to work approximately 8-10 hours per week. In addition, if the student is taking this course for credit recovery or initial credit, it is strongly advised that you check with the student's school to confirm that the topics covered (see course syllabus) match those required by the school. You may also want to confirm with the school the process for receiving credits, which may involve an assessment administered separately by the school.
Students will be able to:
Use the language of mathematics to explain and discuss problem solutions
Apply mathematical principles in problem solving
Review basics mathematics concepts
Solve real world problems
Gain an understanding of where mathematics is used in the real world
5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13
