This course is designed to develop an authentic and practical understanding of the Spanish language and culture. Students will have the ability to express their thoughts, feelings, and opinions in the target language within basic, real-life situations and learning scenarios. All new concepts, grammatical concepts, and cultural information will be introduced in context while incorporating various listening, speaking, and writing activities.

Greetings and basic conversation
Describing yourself and others
Numbers
Leisure activities and preferences
Daily school life and telling time
Sports
Students learn through online lesson activities, videos, and interactive activities. Modules contain a variety of lessons, which conclude with a brief self-check and module exam. The course concludes with a cumulative exam.
This self-paced course uses content from Accelerate Education taught by a VHS Learning instructor who is certified in their content area and who follows VHS Learning policies. The course will be hosted in the Buzz learning management system.
About the Self-Paced Course Model
Self-Paced courses are designed for students who need flexibility in their academic schedule. Teachers answer questions and interact with students in Private Topics, provide feedback on work, and host weekly office hours. Students work independently on course activities; the course does not include class discussion assignments or other collaborative work.
This course has start dates on each Wednesday throughout the year. Students must maintain enrollment for a minimum of 4 weeks and have up to 16 weeks to complete all assignments in the course. It is expected that students will work for approximately 90 hours to complete this course, though the amount of time may vary depending on a student’s work habits and comfort with the material.

- Develop vocabulary skills by utilizing new words on familiar and everyday topics, using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases, and simple sentences.
- Recognize, understand, and apply a variety of grammar concepts, including singular and plural nouns, indefinite articles, adjectives, .
- Articulate needs and wants using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases, and simple sentences.
- Ask questions about oneself and others, using who, what, when, and how.
- Answer questions using the word no.
- Utilize a variety of verbs appropriately, including ser, estar, hay, tener, gustar, ir, jugar.
- Discuss various cultural elements of Spanish-speaking countries around the world.
