This is a self-paced course in which students will continue their study of mathematical concepts. Students will explore concepts related to introductory trigonometry and graphs, trigonometric equations and identities, analytical trigonometry, conic sections, and an introduction to calculus. This course includes a focus on graphing functions and understanding and identifying parts of a graph. A scientific and/or graphics calculator is recommended for work on assignments, and on examinations.
Major topics include:
How graphs of trigonometric functions model real-world phenomena
Solving right triangle problems with trigonometric ratio and the Unit Circle
Modeling numeric patterns with explicit or recursive functions
Formulas used to find sums of numbers
Similarities and differences between equations of conic sections
Limits, continuity, and calculus
Students learn through online lesson activities, videos, and interactive activities. Each module includes lessons that conclude with a brief quiz as well as a module exam. The course contains a cumulative final exam.
About Summer Math Courses
Summer initial-credit math courses are self-paced courses intended to help students accelerate their math study. The courses use content from Accelerate Education taught by certified VHS Learning teachers who will support students, answer questions, and provide feedback. The courses are hosted in the Buzz learning management system. Students may spend 60-80 hours completing this course, though time-spent will vary based on a student’s performance and capacity for independent study. Students will have up to 6-weeks to complete a course and can request a transcript in as little as 4 weeks, if they finish all course activities in that timeframe.

- Identify and analyze graphs of the sine, cosine, and tangent functions.
- Apply trigonometric identities to solve problems and calculate values of angles.
- Apply the Law of Sines and Cosines to calculate sides and angles.
- Create formulas to model data and apply formulas to calculate sums.
- Classify arithmetic vs. geometric sequences.
- Interpret meaning of variables in equations of circles, hyperbolas, parabolas, and ellipses.
- Solve quadratic systems of equations using different methods.
- Explore concepts related to limits and continuity.
