Do you dream of designing your own line of clothing or accessories? Learn what it takes to get started in the fashion industry, from the careers available to new technology and trends reshaping the industry every day.
Students who enroll in this class must have access to the materials listed in the course description and a basic understanding of hand or machine sewing.

This paced course uses content from eDynamic Learning taught by a VHS Learning instructor who is certified in their content area and who follows VHS Learning policies. The course will be hosted in the Buzz learning management system. The course will include a variety of individual assignments and projects, as well as class discussions.
Prerequisites
This course contains an end-of-course proctored exam. Instructions for students to identify an appropriate adult proctor are included in the course lessons.
Course Objectives
- Explore career and entrepreneurship opportunities in the fashion industry
- Differentiate between assertive and aggressive communication
- Identify appropriate tools and fabric for different projects
- Demonstrate various stitches, either by hand or machine
- Select appropriate clothing styles for business, casual, and formal occasions
- Describe barrier-free design and ways in which fashion welcomes people with disabilities
- Explain sustainable fashion and describe its popularity
- Create an outfit, demonstrating understanding of cost, market, and production
- Develop positive presentation of skills, talents, and interests
Additional Requirements
Students will need to have access to the following materials to complete this course:
- art supplies, such as paper, pens, colored pencils, paints, tape, glue, scissors, poster board, and markers
- sewing machine (can be electronic programmable, straight stitch, zigzag, or old-style machine; should have tension adjustment controls)
- thread
- fabric
- pattern and pattern tools to mark on fabric, such as tailor’s chalk or pen with disappearing ink
- needle and thread for hand sewing
- measuring tape or yardstick
- raw materials to either create or modify a garment or accessory, such as fabric, buttons, and other components
- if necessary, an iron, ironing board, and possibly a pressing cloth
- images from magazines, including fashion magazines
- paper and index cards
- Word processing and presentation software
- A person who works in the fashion industry to interview
- device to take pictures and/or take video of products
