Description
Did you know that many aspects of the Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) culture and traditions have spearheaded the concept known as globalization? The interconnectedness of nations through trade started long before the 20th century. The 15th and 16th-century Portuguese were already trading commodities with nations in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Portugal was the dominant nation in terms of global trade for nearly 200 years.
In this full-year course, students will continue to develop their Portuguese language skills they learned in Portuguese 1. They will continue to focus on language acquisition skills and the cultural and traditional aspects of Lusophone countries. This course is guided by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language World Readiness Standards and is designed to help students begin working towards proficiency in Portuguese at the Intermediate level.
Students will be expected to read, listen, speak, and write in Portuguese regularly. Students will be asked to make cultural comparisons and to demonstrate an understanding of practices and perspectives of the Lusophone culture. Students will engage in activities and discussions that promote an approach to global awareness through seven (7) thematic units:
- Portuguese 1 Review
- Clothes and Shopping
- Weather and Entertainment
- Celebrations and Traditions
- Work and Business
- Food
- Globalization
Students will engage in lessons that incorporate eBook interactive practices and an overview of vocabulary, grammar, and cultural perspectives. They will also have the opportunity to use authentic resources to learn and engage in topics presented in each unit. Students will apply their knowledge by participating in discussion forums, video notes assignments, writing sentences in Wikis, Blogs, and dropbox assignments, and demonstrating mastery by completing formative and summative assessments.
In this standard-level course, students are expected to invest approximately 6 hours per week on their coursework.
