Throughout this course, you will learn skills that will help you make educated decisions that will influence your financial future and help you reach your financial goals.
This course is designed to introduce students to how money works as well as manage their own personal finances in an efficient manner. Students will develop practical skills to manage their personal finances while applying them to real-life applications. Topics such as managing credit, knowing one’s credit score, taking measures to protect from identity theft, as well as how to shop for college loans, the basics of investing, and the importance of saving for retirement are included in this well-informed course. These skills will provide students with a solid foundation that will guide them in making informed decisions, promoting financial independence, ensuring personal security, and working towards maintaining a stable financial future.
Using web resources and videos, students will work with Next Generation Personal Finance worksheets, and develop fun and engaging infographics and assignments while meeting Massachusetts Personal Financial Literacy Curriculum Frameworks.
About the Self-Paced Course Model
Self-Paced courses are comprehensive and designed for students who need or desire more flexibility in their academic schedule. VHS Learning teachers will regularly interact with students in asynchronous discussions, will host weekly office hours, and will invite students to monthly 1-on-1 progress meetings. Teachers will support students, answer questions, and provide feedback on work. Students will work independently on course activities; the course does not include class discussion assignments or other collaborative work.
This course is open enrollment; students may register and begin at any time. Students must maintain enrollment for a minimum of 6 weeks and have up to 20 weeks to complete all assignments in the course. It is expected that students will work for approximately 95 hours to complete this course, though the amount of time may vary depending on a student’s work habits and comfort with the material.
