Description
Spanish 1 is a full-credit course designed to provide students with an introduction to the Spanish language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. This course is guided by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language World Readiness Standards and is designed to help students begin working towards proficiency in Spanish at the Novice level.
Students will be asked to read, write, listen and speak in Spanish on a regular basis. Students will also be asked to make comparisons between their culture and the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. The course strives to support students who are interested in pursuing their study to the AP level. The thematic units in Spanish 1 connect directly to the themes of the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam, including: (1) Personal & Public Identities (2) Contemporary Life (3) Families & Communities and (4) Beauty & Aesthetics.
About the Self-Paced Course Model Self-Paced courses are comprehensive and designed for students who need or desire more flexibility in their academic schedule. VHS Learning teachers will regularly interact with students in asynchronous discussions, will host weekly office hours, and will invite students to monthly 1-on-1 progress meetings. Teachers will support students, answer questions, and provide feedback on work. Students will work independently on course activities; the course does not include class discussion assignments or other collaborative work.
Students may start this course on any Wednesday from September through the first Monday in February. Students must maintain enrollment for a minimum of 20 weeks and have until mid-June to complete all assignments in the course. It is expected that students will work for approximately 200 hours to complete this course, though the amount of time may vary depending on a student’s work habits and comfort with the material.
Prerequisites
- This course contains an end-of-course proctored exam. Instructions for students to identify an appropriate adult proctor are included in the course lessons.

Course Objectives
Course Learning Objectives: - Students who enroll in Spanish 1 will be working towards the Novice-Mid proficiency level as defined by ACTFL. By the end of the course students will be able to:
- Identify some basic facts from memorized or familiar words and phrases when they are supported by repetition, gestures or visuals in informational texts and in conversations.
- Communicate by asking and answering simple questions on familiar and everyday topics, using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases and simple sentences.
- Demonstrate basic needs related to familiar and everyday activities, using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases, simple sentences, and questions.
- Express personal feelings and preferences and react to those of others, using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases, simple sentences, and questions.
- Present information about oneself, interests and activities using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases and simple sentences (in both speaking and writing).
- Express likes and dislikes on familiar and everyday topics of interest, using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases, and simple sentences (in both speaking and writing).
- Present on a variety of familiar and everyday topics using a mixture of practiced or memorized words, phrases, and simple sentences (in both speaking and writing).
- Identify products and practices of other cultures to help understand their perspectives.
- Compare other cultures with one’s own in familiar everyday contexts.
Additional Requirements
- Access to special characters specific to the language, including á, é, í, ó, ú, ü, ñ, ¡, ¿.
- Access to a device with headphone, microphone, and camera.
- Students will be expected to record and upload videos of themselves speaking in target language in order to exhibit proficiency in the speaking domain using a video tool within the course platform.
