Chinese 3 expands upon skills and knowledge developed in Chinese 1 and 2, while preparing students for the next level of Chinese language proficiency: Chinese 4 and AP Chinese Language and Culture. The course adheres to ACTFL’s World-readiness Standards for Learning Languages (communication, connections, comparisons, culture, and community) through interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational modes. The learning experience incorporates web-based interactive activities.
The spiraled curriculum will revisit vocabulary and sentence structure introduced in Chinese 1 and 2, while expanding upon these areas with new vocabulary and additional grammar lessons in Chinese 3. Each of the ten units will incorporate at least one of the six AP Themes outlined by the College Board: Beauty and Aesthetics, Global Challenges, Families and Communities, Personal and Public Identities, Science and Technology, and Contemporary Life. Students will participate in discussions related to cultural topics and other course material, complete typewritten and speaking activities, listen to authentic Chinese audio and video files, practice reading authentic and relevant materials and engage in collaborative projects. Throughout the course, students will gain insight into Chinese culture and discuss relevant and engaging subject matter.
Students who enroll in Chinese 3 will be working towards the Intermediate Mid proficiency level as defined by ACTFL. By the end of the course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate intermediate-mid-level proficiency in Chinese pronunciation skills, including the ability to apply tones accurately.
2. Conduct intermediate—mid-level conversations on daily topics, and understand instructions, in Chinese.
3. Read and type to express oneself in paragraphs, and expand active vocabulary by hundreds of words and phrases, using the simplified Chinese character set. Students will also demonstrate and employ a more sophisticated sentence structure in their work.
4. Continue to develop and demonstrate a deepening understanding of Chinese culture and civilization.
