Building upon a solid foundation developed in VHS Learning’s Chinese 1 online course, Chinese 2 extends core skills, expanding students’ receptive (listening and reading comprehension) and expressive (speaking and pronunciation) abilities in Chinese, while also increasing their vocabulary. Chinese 2 also continues to build students’ knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Chinese Culture, including the arts, literature, customs, and the history of Chinese-speaking people.
Students will increase their skill level in conversation, engaging in discourse for either informative or social purposes. They will learn more complex sentence construction and phrasing in Chinese 2, and comprehend the language when spoken slowly. Learning will take place within the context of various topics, including Personal and Public Identities, Families and Communities, Contemporary Life, Science and Technology, Beauty and Aesthetics, and Global Challenges.
The course adheres to ACTFL’s World-readiness Standards for Learning Languages (communication, connections, comparisons, culture, and community) through interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational modes. The curriculum is blended with cutting-edge web-based interactive activities to promote more personalized learning and carry the interactive learning experience beyond the virtual classroom setting itself.
Students who enroll in Chinese 2 will be working towards the Intermediate Low proficiency level as defined by ACTFL. By the end of the course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in Chinese pronunciation skills, including the ability to apply tones accurately.
2. Conduct intermediate-level conversations on daily topics, and understand instructions, in Chinese.
3. Read and type to express oneself in paragraphs with an active vocabulary of hundreds of simplified Chinese characters.
4. Continue to develop and demonstrate a basic understanding of Chinese culture and civilization.
